He has become particularly well know for making glass ‘space-scapes’ marbles. These are between 36-48mm in diameter, using their unique optics to create the illusion of depth and distance inside solid glass spheres. Materials used are laboratory grade Pyrex glass for its clarity, pure silver and gold for the nebulas, and Gilson opals to create asteroids, moons and planets.
Working directly in an oxygen/propane flame each item is totally handformed using borosilicate glass (known commonly by the ‘Pyrex’ Trade name.) The unusual nature and very high metal content of borosilicate coloured glass produces colours unlike those normally found in the ‘traditional’ glass palette. The intense colours, metallic lusters and ability of some colours to change with the light make this the ideal material to produce work that looks alien and other-worldly.
With over 15 years of experience under his ‘SteamPunk Glass ’ alias Glenn has studied under top glass artists, as well as teaching others culminating in 2015 being invited to be guest artist at UK ‘Flame Off’ demonstrating to an international audience of lampworkers, along side select artists from Russia, USA and France. His work has sold to collectors in over 30 countries, made glass presentation pens for a European academic association where some where even presented to Nobel prize winners, and one of his galaxy marbles has appeared as a major prop in an Australian feature film.
